Povilas Mačiulis is stepping down as deputy mayor of Lithuania's second-biggest city of Kaunas as he prepares to help Vygaudas Ušackas in his presidential election campaign.

"I'm resigning as vice-mayor," Mačiulis told BNS on Thursday afternoon.

"I have promised to help Ušackas if he decides to stand in the election. Following his decision to run for president, my support and assistance for him is hardly compatible with my municipal job," he said.
