Visvaldas Matijošaitis has won Lithuania's best mayor award. The elections were organised for the eighth consecutive year. The mayor of Klaipėda, Vytautas Grubliauskas came in second place with Vilnius mayor Remigijus Šimašius in third.

“It was unexpected”, said Matijošaitis. He said the award was not just for his efforts but an evaluation of the whole professional team that had been put together in Kaunas municipality.

The best mayor elections this year had three criteria: the magazine‘s Veidas rating of municipalities in 2015, last year‘s municipality index by the Lithuanian Free Market Institute and the results of a vote.

At the award ceremony on Thursday, the editor in chief of magazine Veidas, Rimvydas Valatka presented Matijošaitis with a mayor‘s symbol made by Vilniaus kalviai (blacksmiths).
