The appointment of a new ambassador stalled after the parliamentary Committee on Foreign Affairs rejected Ambassador to Demark Vytautas Pinkus as a candidate for the ambassadorial position in Kiev.

According to the daily, Janukonis, head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' Eastern Neighborhood Policy Department, who has previously worked at the Lithuanian Embassy in Kiev as a minister plenipotentiary, satisfies Lithuanian lawmakers as a candidate for ambassador to Ukraine. He should assume the new position after Ukraine agrees to receive the proposed ambassador.

The ambassadorial position in Kiev has been vacant since 29 December when the term of Petras Vaitiekūnas ended.
