"I am here today to help law-enforcement to establish all the circumstances in connection to the probe that has made headlines and provide all the necessary information to allow for the investigation to be unbiased and completed as soon as possible," Steponavičius told journalists after being questioned as witness at the Prosecutor General's Office.
Lithuanian prosecutors are currently conducting a probe into suspected bribery of MPs Eligijus Masiulis of the Liberal Movement and Vytautas Gapšys of the Labour Party. They are suspected of taking bribes from MG Baltic vice-president Raimondas Kurlianskis for protecting the company's interests.
Steponavičius said the four hours of questioning focused on "a number of episodes in connection to the case".
Asked about his role in the investigation, the MP said: "I am one of the persons who was engaged in rather intensive communication with the party's former leader (Masiulis), I am also familiar with Kurlianskis, and I had to make all of the circumstances known."
In the framework of the probe, Lithuanian authorities searched the home of Vytautas Toleikis, the head of Steponavičius' charity fund. Toleikis was then questioned by agents of the Special Investigation Service.
Lithuanian prosecutors suspect that Kurlianskis handed a bribe of €106,000 to Masiulis, also suspecting that Gapšys, the Labour Party's vice-chairman, accepted a bribe of €25,000 from Kurlianskis for adopting two political decisions that were favourable and financially beneficial for MG Baltic.
