High-quality higher education should continue to be available in Lithuania's regions, but that does not necessarily mean keeping the existing inefficient higher education institutions intact, Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis said on Thursday.

"University-level studies will continue to be available in the regions, including Šiauliai. What we are speaking about is that there should be a completely different quality of studies. If anyone thinks that this is equivalent to keeping the universality, then these are two fundamentally different positions," he told the Žinių Radijas radio station.

Skvernelis and Education and Science Minister Jurgita Petrauskienė said last week that only up to five state universities might be left in the country as they briefed journalists on a planned reform of the higher education network.

Lithuania currently has 14 state universities and several tens of the so-called universities of applied sciences.
