Former President of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus is celebrates his 89th birthday on Tuesday.

The former president, who has always been open about his health, has been fighting cancer for three years. This July, Mr. Adamkus had a kidney removed and also underwent chemotherapy.

Adamkus was Lithuania's president between 1998 and 2003 and between 2004 and 2009.
