The information was confirmed by Jevgenija Lipskaja, the mother of the 56-year-old suspect currently held in detention. She said she could not believe her son could collaborate with Belarusian secret services and leak key information about strategic objects in Lithuania.

"We learned that our son had been under surveillance for three years. He didn't even go to Belarus – he hadn't been there for probably ten years, we only went there together last year to look after grandparents' graves. I was there with my son for two days," said Lipskaja, 80.

Both the mother and the spouse said they could not believe the charges against Lipskis.

The Lithuanian Prosecutor General's Office and the State Security Department said on 10 November that charges were brought against a Lithuanian citizen of spying for Belarus, the case was sent to court. An investigation is in progress with regard to another suspected spy who has not been arrested yet.

The suspect faces up to 15 years in prison.
