Lithuania's Foreign Minister Linas Linkevičius stated on 23 September he wanted to stay on as the country's diplomacy chief and would leave the Social democratic Party that had moved to leave the ruling coalition with the Farmers and Greens Union.

"I will Monday file a plea to leave the party. (…) If I have the support from the president and the prime minister, I will continue doing the work that requires efforts, consistency and quality, to tell you the truth," the minister told BNS on Saturday.

President Dalia Grybauskaitė stated she did not see any reasons for replacing the minister of foreign affairs. "Minister Linkevičius is a professional diplomat and experienced minister. I see no reasons to have him replaced," Grybauskaitė said in a comment sent to BNS by the President's Office after the Social Democratic Party's decision to exit the bloc.

Linkevičius has been serving as foreign minister since 2012. In 1993 -1996 and 2000-2004, he was Lithuania's defense minister.

Linkevicius, a member of the Social Democrats, has served as adviser to foreign minister, Lithuania's ambassador to NATO and Belarus.

After starting his political career in 1983, he worked in Communist youth organizations until 1989. In 1990 -1992, Linkevicius was a responsible employee of the Central Committee of the independent Lithuanian Communist Party. After the party changed name into the Lithuanian Democratic Labor Party, Linkevičius continued his membership. The party later merged with the Social Democrats.
