The Lithuanian government on Wednesday asked Jonas Milius, director of the State Food and Veterinary Service (VMVT), to prepare an activity report and submit it to the Cabinet, which will then decide on whether to dismiss him from the job.

"At today's meeting, the Agriculture Ministry was instructed not only to evaluate the STT (Special Investigation Service) findings, but also to ask the VMVT's head to submit a report on his activities as director, which will later be assessed by the full Cabinet," Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius told reporters.

"If the activity report is unsatisfactory, the Cabinet will then take steps to dismiss the director," he said.

Law-enforcement officials have brought suspicions of abuse of office against Milius. They suspect that Judex, a Kaunas-based frozen food company, sought to influence the VMVT via Petras Gražulis, a member of the Seimas, to avoid penalties for violations.

The Special Investigation Service (STT) says that it has identified corruption risks in the VMVT activities.

Milius has dismissed the suspicions and has refused to step down despite calls to do so from Butkevičius and President Dalia Grybauskaitė. The director says that he did not overstep the law in helping Judex and that his resignation would mean admitting wrongdoing.
