One pre-trial investigation into suspected bribery of voters was opened during the mayoral elections in the Šakiai and Jonava districts and MP election in the Panevėžys-Anykščiai constituency this past weekend, however, evidence shows that the incident should not revise the election results, says Zenonas Vaigauskas, chairman of the Lithuanian Central Electoral Commission.

Vaigauskas also confirmed that the latest elections had showed that voter bribery had declined: "The police was working as always to prevent cases of bribery, and it is truly pleasant to conclude that the work is effective – the negative phenomenon in Lithuania has decreased in scale," said the chief of the election watchdog.

Vaidas Girsvildas of the Police Department said at the news conference that merely one investigation had been started in connection to the election.

During the Sunday's election, Edgaras Pilypaitis was elected as the mayor of the Sakiai district, Social Democrat Eugenijus Sabutis was elected as Jonava mayor and the MP mandate in the Anykščiai-Panevėžys constituency was won by Antanas Baura. The results should be confirmed on Wednesday.
