Lithuania's MP and former Finance Minister Ingrida Šimonytė on Monday announced her decision to take part in the primaries of the opposition conservative Homeland Union – Lithuanian Christian Democrats, held to select a presidential candidate.

"I have confirmed by intention to take part in the party's primary election," Šimonytė told journalists.

She said did not actively seek nomination but "huge support within the party community and also from people who are not related with the party in any way has made me change my mind".

"It's only agreement to take part in the primaries. It doesn’t mean I will be nominated," she said.

Šimonytė, 43, served as finance minister in 2009-2012, and previously was a board member of the Bank of Lithuania. She's currently the chair of the parliamentary Committee on Audit.

She is a member of the TS-LKD political group in the Seimas, despite not being a party member.

37 TS-LKD branches have nominated Šimonytė for president, more than any other candidate.

Earlier in the day, economist Gitanas Nausėda announced his decision to run for president as an independent candidate, without seeking the TS-LKD's support.

And diplomat Vygaudas Ušackas, nominated by some of the TS-LKD branches, plans to announce his decision during a press conference at 1.30 p.m. on Monday.
