Europe must learn from its mistakes and integrate refugees according to the principles of the society as a whole, Geert Bourgeois, the minister-president of Flanders, one of the three regions of Belgium, said in Vilnius on Tuesday.

"If there's one lesson to underline, we should stand firm on the principles of our whole society, which are the principles of the whole European Union," he said at a joint news conference with Lithuanian Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius.

Western European nations were too late to start implementing integration policies, which led to some immigrant communities becoming isolated, Bourgeois said.

He said migrants in European countries must be familiar with the cultures and languages of their adopted homes and the state must assist them in finding employment.

Belgium is home to around half a million Muslims. Officials estimate that about 500 people have left Belgium to fight in the Middle-East and many of them have joined ISIS.
