Estonia plans to establish its honorary consulate in Lithuania's second-largest city of Kaunas. The plans were announced by Estonian Ambassador to Lithuania Toomas Kukkdueing during his recent visit to the city, Kaunas Municipality said on Friday.

"We would like to have an honorary consulate not only in Klaipėda but also in Kaunas. We are glad that we have already found a person suitable for this position. The Kaunas consulate would also cover Marijampolė and Alytus Districts," the ambassador said.

Kaunas Mayor Andrius Kupčinskas hopes it will help to strengthen ties between Kaunas and Estonian cities.

According to the Estonian ambassador, the consulate should be opened early next year. It will be headed by Kaunas University of Technology's professor Žaneta Simanavičienė.
