European Parliament President Martin Schulz congratulated Lithuania on the 25th anniversary of the restoration of its independence during a commemoration in Brussels, calling Lithuanians "heroes".

"You are heroes for freedom in Europe," the EP president tweeted following the Wednesday commemoration.

In Brussels, Schulz met with visiting Speaker of the Lithuanian Seimas Loreta Graužinienė. Their conversation mainly focused on the situation in Ukraine, the Lithuanian parliament said.

Lithuania will mark the 25th anniversary of restoring its independence on 11 March.
