Edmundas Vaitekūnas, the chairman of the Lithuanian Radio and Television Commission (LRTK), who was delegated by the Labour Party to assume the post of the education and science minister, has refused to stand as a candidate, Lithuanian Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius confirmed on Monday. The PM says that a new candidate has already been nominated.

"This morning, I have met with the candidate to the science and education minister's post but he informed me that he, however, is refusing to stand as a candidate to the post. He said that last week he got familiarised with the projected tasks at the Science and Education Ministry and since he believes that the term of office would be too short, the candidate has decided that there is no point for him to assume the post now," Butkevičius told reporters.

The PM also said that a new candidate has been nominated to the post and the Special Investigations Service (STT) has been requested to check the candidate's transparency.

"Once the STT report is ready, I will submit the candidacy to the president," PM Butkevičius said.
