The European Commission (EC) intends to send an official letter to France on Thursday, notifying the country about the initiation of an infringement procedure in connection to its laws that puts foreign carriers working in its territory to pay the same wages that are paid to French drivers, EC member Elzbieta Bienkowska in charge of internal market said in Vilnius on Thursday.

"We have two member-states with the same law - Germany and France. Regarding Germany, we have already started infringement procedure and in a few hours we will send the same letter to France. Procedures are being finalized. From the single market perspective, it raises a lot of concerns and we are actively discussing this issue," Bienkowska told Vilnius journalists after meeting with Lithuania's Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius.

"Lithuania's government does not support the European Commission's proposal on revision of the directive on employee posting. In the government's opinion, the current proposal will have a negative effect on the competition of member-states of the European Union," Butkevičius said after meeting with the EC official.

In April, France adopted a new law, envisaging that drivers driving cargo to or from France should be paid just over €9 per hour starting July.

In protest of the new scheme, carriers from Lithuania and ten more countries held a protest action in Brussels this week, presenting EU representatives with demands on the unfair French actions.
