The Lithuanian foreign minister's adviser Kęstutis Vaškelevičius said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs so far has no official confirmation of presence of Lithuanian citizens on the ship.

"We have contacted Russia's Ministry of Emergency Situations, we have no official data so far, we are working further and keeping an eye on the situation," said Vaškelevičius.

At least 54 sailors perished when the Russian ship sank in early hours of Thursday, while 15 are missing. AFP news agency said that 78 Russian citizens were aboard the ship, in addition to at least 40 people from Burma, while nationals of Ukraine, Lithuania and Vanuatu could have also been aboard.

Britain's national broadcaster, the BBC, has reported the crew included Latvian, not Lithuanian citizens.

Lithuania's Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius told the Žinių Radijas news radio on Thursday morning he had unofficial information from his foreign policy adviser that no Lithuanians were aboard the sunken ship.
