The works to deepen the Klaipėda sea port offshore shipping channel to accommodate bigger ships at higher speeds have been completed.

“It is very important that the higher gauge vessels can maintain a higher speeds under complex weather conditions and safely reach the port gates. This is a significant step tpowards the 17 meter depth in the future,” said the Klaipėda State Seaport Authority Director General Arvydas Vaitkus.

The initial dredging to a depth of 15.5 meters has been completed, the first steps in delivering a final target depth of 17 meters.

A 1,200 metre section of the external shipping channel has been deepened with more than 51,000 cubic meters of soil excavated.

The Belgian company Jan de Nul N.V carried out the works at a cost of €1.08 million.

The plan is to deepen the port shipping channel to the mouth of the river to the 16.5-17 meters depth until 2018-2020.
