Leaders of Lithuania's opposition conservative and Liberal parties, Gabrielius Landsbergis and Remigijus Šimašius, on Wednesday urged Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius of the ruling Social Democrats to check whether he still had the parliament's confidence.

The suggestion came in response to the Social Democrats' criticism of President Dalia Grybauskaitė, while the prime minister's spokesman said the call was ungrounded.

"The openly insulting, misleading and offensive public statements about the president of the republic clearly show that the prime minister no longer cares about the confidence of the president. We are convinced that, under the current circumstances, the prime minister should check without delay whether he still enjoys trust of the Seimas," the two politicians said in a communique.

"In the prime minister's opinion, the call is utterly ungrounded and makes no sense," Butkevičius' spokesman Mindaugas Janulionis told BNS.

After Grybauskaitė urged Defense Minister Juozas Olekas to step down amid the overpriced army acquisitions scandal, the Social Democrats expressed doubt in the president's ability to perform her direct duties.

Šimašius and Landsbergis, the leaders of the conservative Homeland Union – Lithuanian Christian Democrats and the Liberal Movement, dismissed the statement as "a demonstration of desperation and low political culture, which affects the authority of the country's Constitutional system, the population's confidence in the Constitutional institutions of the government and the prime minister, as well as their ability to act responsibly."
