In a public letter, the Lithuanian Confederation of Bishops emphasized the Church position that life should be protected from the moment of conception, and families should be based on a marriage between a man and a woman.

"Moral culture is needed in order for the country to follow the law and have a prospering economy. Every human being should be defended and protected from the moment of conception to his death, along with people with disabilities or incurable diseases. The love of close ones start in a family that is based on a marriage – a man and a woman giving himself to one another," said Lithuanian bishops.

According to the letter, only "a candidate who respects and actively supports the values can understand the importance of basic morals to a free society."

The confederation did not specify the laws, however, the Catholic Church is an active participant in discussions of artificial insemination, abortion ban and family definition.

According to the latest census of 2011, 77 percent of Lithuania's population identify themselves as Roman Catholics.

The 1st round of parliamentary elections is scheduled for October 9.
