"Under the treaties, diplomas would be automatically recognized in Lithuania," Eugenijus Jovaiša, chairman of the parliamentary Education and Science Committee, told BNS.

The Education and Science Ministry said Lithuania would want the treaty to be signed in June.

In Jovaiša's words, after the treaty takes effect, graduates of universities in Lithuania, Latvia or Estonia will be able to proceed to the next phase of education in any other country and get employment without any additional approval of their diplomas.

Jovaiša of the ruling Lithuanian Farmers and Greens Union is proposing an amendment of the Education and Science Law on automatic recognition of diplomas.

Under the current law, foreign diplomas are recognized by the Center for Quality Assessment in Higher Education, the Lithuanian Research Council and higher schools authorized by the minister of education and science.
