Chiefs of defence of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia have sent a letter to Commander of the US European Command General Philip Breedlove, asking to deploy a brigade-sized unit in the region.

"The letter was sent on Friday," Captain Mindaugas Neimontas, spokesman for the Lithuanian Armed Forces, told BNS on Monday.

The three Baltic countries aim to have a battalion-sized unit permanently deployed in each of the countries, and they would together form a brigade. This is described as a deterrent in response to the Russian actions in the region.

A brigade-sized unit usually consists of 2,000-3,000 troops.

The three Baltic nations have been each hosting a company of US troops – about 150 – since last year. Other Allies are also sending their soldiers for exercises to the region, however, this is not done on a regular basis.
