According to Minister of Foreign Affairs Linas Linkevičius, US Secretary of State John Kerry and German Chancellor Angela Merkel were distinctly active in foreign policy this year. Linkevičius also noticed that the role of personalities has been giving way to coordinated work of institutions and international organisations.

"It is difficult to pick out just one person. If we talk globally, the German chancellor was active. Her decisions frequently determine how the scales in the European and global policy would shift. Efforts of US diplomats were clearly visible both in the Middle East and Syria as well as in other regions. John Kerry practically lives more on the plane than on the ground," Linkevičius told the radio Žinių Radijas.

British newspaper The Times nominated Angela Merkel as the person of the year for her efforts to improve security situation in Europe and for active mediation in the conflict in Ukraine.

Linkevičius has emphasised that despite all diplomatic efforts the security situation has not improved in the world, while the number of conflicts has not reduced.

"Regrettably, we cannot say that the results are pleasing, there are many "hot" conflicts," the minister said.
