He called on Estonia, Latvia and the European Commission to step up efforts to make sure that the nuclear power plant being built in Belarus complied with international environmental protection and nuclear safety standards.

“The nuclear power plant under construction in Astravyets, Belarus, needs special focus. Astravyets is close to the external border of the European Union - we see this project as a threat not only to the national security of Lithuania but the whole of Europe as well,” said the Lithuanian prime minister after a meeting with his Latvian and Estonian counterparts in Riga.

Butkevičius also attacked plans by Russia and Germany to build the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline saying it went against the objectives of the European Union.

“This project goes against the objectives of the European Union, Lithuania and, certainly, all three Baltic states to reduce the energy dependence on Russia”, said the Lithuanian Prime Minister.

He said that he had discussed these challenges to energy security with Vice-President of the European Commission, responsible for Energy Union Maroš Šefčovič on Monday.
