Three more Lithuanian universities entered the ranking in the 701+ category: Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (VGTU), Kaunas Technology University (KTU) and Vytautas Magnus University (VDU).

The ratings are based on academic performance, reputation among employers, ratio of students to lecturers in various departments, index of citation frequency, percentage of foreign lecturers and students.

“This is a truly historical recognition as we are now the first in the country to enter the elite group of the best 500 universities in the world. Such international recognition only confirms that the strategic changes we have made are contributing to the realization of our goals. We will not stop at domestic leadership, our goal is to stand side by side with the best universities in Europe, something that will require focus both from us and the government,” Vilnius University rector, professor Artūras Žukauskas expressed his elation at the university rising from the 501-550 positions of last year to the 481-490 positions this year.

Vilnius University’s key strengths were identified as the ratio of students per lecturer (217th position), high academic reputation and reputation among employers, a metric that the university has notably improved in, rising by 44 positions to 352nd. Academic production data also improved with the number of citations rising by 34.6% in the 2011-2015 period.

While in the overall ratings VGTU trails behind VU, a VGTU press released focused on VGTU proving to be the highest rated university in the QS World University Rankings by Subject for civil and structural engineering in the Baltic region, reaching 101-150th position.

“Of all 42 areas evaluated, only VGTU reached such high marks. In the same rating VU reached 301-400th position in the areas of Physics and Astronomy.”
