The City Council of Vilnius decided on Wednesday to allocate 500,000 euros to the Lietuvos Rytas basketball club and the Žalgiris football club each.

However, the funding was approved on condition that the city's stake in both clubs is increased to two-fifths and that the clubs' bylaws are changed to ensure that decisions on their activities are discussed at the council.

Some members of the council opposed the proposal to provide 1 million euros to the clubs, saying that the funds ought to be allocated to culture or public organizations or children's education.
