Vytautas Kleiva, mayor of Lithuania's western town Telšiai, was killed in a car accident on Friday.

The mayor was driving a Toyota RAV 4 in Vilnius when it skid off the road, drove off a slope, hit some trees before coming to a stop in nearby bushes. Emergency medics tried to resuscitate the man but could not save his life.

It is presumed that the car accident happened because 55-year-old Kleiva had fallen ill suddenly.

An employee of Telšiai District Municipality, who was also in the car, was not seriously injured.
