On Monday, President Dalia Grybauskaitė congratulated the students of Vilnius University (VU) on the occasion of the New Academic Year and unveiled a renovated monument to Kristijonas Donelaitis, 18-century author credited as the father of Lithuanian-language fiction writing.

"Today the statute of the originator of the Lithuanian fiction literature returns to where it should be - to the space full of freedom and education. Kristijonas Donelaitis, the fosterer of the Lithuanian language and culture, reminds us all the vitality that lies within the Lithuanian language, our land and nation," the president said.

The president wished students to bravely accept new challenges, to acquire knowledge for personal development and contribute with ideas, skills and initiatives to the development of Lithuania.
