Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis sees no need for an agreement on curbing emigration, saying that measures aimed at doing so are envisaged in the government's program.

"Let's fully implement the government's program. This will help both reduce emigration and encourage people to come back and, as far as the demographic situation goes, will encourage people to have children," Skvernelis said during an online chat hosted by 15min.lt.

"Do we need to sign an agreement? (Do we need) yet another separate program? Do you know how these programs are written? All ministries will take things out of their plans and combine these together. Some ministry will be made responsible and nothing will be done," he added.

The prime minister was commenting on an initiative by Ramūnas Karbauskis, the leader of the Lithuanian Farmers and Green Union, the party that appointed Skvernelis to the post, for an agreement between political parties and public organizations on stemming migration.

Statistics Lithuania has recently released figures showing that over 50, 000 people emigrated from Lithuania last year and almost 14,000 left the country in the first two months of this year.
