The Social Security and Labor Ministry will seek that the Seimas introduce the concept of violence against women into Lithuanian law during its fall session.

The ministry is calling a meeting of various institutions on Thursday to discuss the issue.

"During this (parliamentary) session, we must make sure that the concept of violence against women emerges," Deputy Social Security and Labor Minister Eitvydas Bingelis said at a discussion hosted by the Swedish embassy in Vilnius on Tuesday.

"This will give some inertia and an impetus in discussions about that, (...) because people don't know that this is a problem, a norm, imposed roles and so on," he added.

Such a law would be the first step toward putting in place broader measures to assist women in cases of violence, the official said.

The discussion at the Swedish embassy centered around the so-called Istanbul Convention on preventing and combating violence against women.

The ruling Lithuanian Farmers and Greens Union (LVŽS) has put the ratification of the convention on hold until a compromise is reached on the concept of gender.
