On 1 January 2014, the population of the European Union was estimated to stand at 507.4 million, compared with 505.7 million one year before. The population growth is due to a natural increase of 80,000 and a net migration of 700,000, while the remainder can be explained by statistical adjustments, according to EU statistics office Eurostat.

As a long-term trend, the population of the countries making up the European Union has increased by around 100 million since 1960 (from 407 million to 507 million).

However, the population recorded in Lithuania on 1 January 2014 was 2.943 million. While on 1 January 2013 it was 2.971 million.
