59 percent of people questioned by Vilmorus pollster July said they trusted the police, which is up by two percentage points compared to June and is also the highest rating since 1998, Vilmorus head Vladas Gaidys told BNS on Saturday.

The same number of people surveyed also said they trusted Lithuania's army, up by 5 percentage pointes, the Lietuvos Rytas daily writes.

92.5 percent people in Lithuania have trust in firefighters, followed by the education system (56.6 percent), the social insurance fund SoDra (56 percent), the Church (56 percent), the health system (54 percent) and the presidential institution (55 percent). The rating of all of these institutions grew in July.

According to Gaidys, the major negative tendency observed for the third month running is the continuous drop in the trust in banks, and that is probably down to the ongoing discussions about bank charges. 37 percent of people surveyed in July said they trusted banks, and 30 percent said they did not. The remaining did not have an opinion.

"Trust in banks is down for a third month running. It was previously related to bankruptcies. There were no bankruptcies this time but there was a lot of talking about charges, cards, and people probably did not like it very much," Gaidys told BNS.

People in Lithuania have least trust in political parties and the Seimas, showed the survey of 1,030 people on July 2-12.
