Vilnius University's satellite LituanicaSAT-1 will soon end its space mission – it should burn in the atmosphere in about a week, between 24-28 July, the university said.

The satellite launched by Kaunas University of Technology finished its mission in May.

Laurynas Mačiulis, one of the people behind the Vilnius University satellite, says the mission allowed the team to check certain technological solutions that lived up to their expectations.

"One of the main ones was the radio rebroadcaster made here in Lithuania. (…) I am also glad to say that LituanicaSAT-1 is the first satellite in this class to successfully test a frequency modulator voice rebroadcaster in space," said the scientist.

The mission also resulted in the first Lithuanian photographs made from space, which should be published shortly. Other Lithuanian-made components of the satellite were also tested successfully in space.

Vilnius University is already working on the second satellite.

The Kaunas scientists had launched another satellite, LitSat1, to space. The satellite entered the atmosphere of the Earth in May and burned after orbiting the planet 1,303 times and sending the nation's message "Lithuania Loves Freedom" from space about 1.3 million times.
