English is the most popular foreign language in Lithuania, as it is in all EU member states. However, the Baltic states stand out in terms of the Russian language, with almost 67% of children studying Russian as a second foreign language.

In Estonia, almost 65% of children study Russian at schools, followed by Latvia (over 60%) and Bulgaria (almost 18%).

Around 17% of pupils in Lithuania study only one foreign language at secondary schools (5-12 grades), compared to the EU rate of almost 39%.

A number of EU countries stand out in the figures. All or almost all children study two foreign languages in Luxembourg (100%), Finland (98.5%), Italy (over 98%), Estonia (over 96%) and Romania (almost 96%). Fewer than 10% of children study two foreign languages in Hungary, Ireland and Austria.

The most popular foreign languages include English at over 97%, French at almost 34%, German at around 23% and Spanish at around 13%. Across the EU, Russian is the fifth most popular foreign language with 2.7% of children studying it.

Eurostat pays attention to the fact that some countries have several state languages.
