Last November, prosecutors said the case included 69 suspects, mostly Russian, Ukrainian and Belarusian citizens of whom many live abroad and will probably be tried in absentia.

One of the suspects, Russian citizen Yuri Mel, former Soviet officer, was arrested in Lithuania. According to information available to Lithuanian prosecutors, the Russian citizen was in one of the tanks that attacked the Vilnius TV Tower in January 1991.

Parties in the trial were given time until this summer to study the case materials.

Fourteen people were killed during an attack on the Vilnius TV Tower and the Radio and Television Committee building in the Lithuanian capital by Soviet units in early hours of January 13, 1991. Hundreds were injured

In 1999, six individuals – Mykolas Burokevičius, Juozas Jarmalavičius, Juozas Kuolelis, Leonas Bartosevičius, Stanislav Mickevič and Jaroslav Prokopovič – were sentenced for involvement in anti-state organizations and other crimes.
