"We decided to offer our summer house, the former house of my parents and my childhood home, as temporary housing to the refugees," the politician said.

“We believe that we must help them. The state does not necessarily have to be the main helping hand,” he said.

Yasser and Hansi Al-Any and their two children, who arrived in Lithuania in late 2015, live in the Auštrevičius family's property in Juodšiliai, in the district of Vilnius, free of charge. They will only have to pay the utility bills.

The refugee family moved in several weeks ago.

Lithuania has committed itself to taking in 1,105 refugees over two years under the EU's program. Eleven people, two families and a couple from Syria, have been relocated to the country so far.
