The number of state universities in Lithuania has to be cut to no more than five, Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis said on Wednesday.

The prime minister and Education and Science Minister Jurgita Petrauskienė briefed journalists on a planned reform of the higher education network.

A study by the research and higher education monitoring and analysis center MOSTA recommends leaving three to five universities, as well as one or two arts academies and the military academy, in the country by 2025.

President backs Government in its bid to cut university numbers

Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaitė backs the government in its bid to cut the number of universities.

"A higher education reform is among the top priorities identified by the president for the 17th government. The president supports the government in its efforts to reduce the number of higher education institutions and improve the quality of higher education," the president's press office said in a comment to BNS on Wednesday.

Lithuania currently has 14 state universities.
