Vilija Lapėnienė, head of the Statistics Lithuania, says higher alcohol prices and a ban on alcohol promotion are behind a drop in alcohol consumption in Lithuania.

"Both production and sale are going down. Prices have gone up significantly. It has to do the price," Lapėnienė told a press conference on Wednesday.

In her words, the ban on supermarket deals might also have had impact on the decrease in alcohol consumption.

"Naturally, the ban on supermarket deals might have had to do with it. Those deals probably used to attract people," she said.

Lapeniene could not say how much the illegal alcohol market contracted last year.

The Statistics Lithuania's latest figures showed earlier in the day that one Lithuanian resident, aged 15 or older, consumed 12.3 liters of legal alcohol on average in Lithuania last year, 0.9 liters down from 13.2 liters in 2016.
