Lithuanian prosecutors have opened an investigation into anti-gay statements posted in comment sections of Lithuanian online newspapers in the wake of the deadly attack in a night club in Orlando, Florida.

“Prosecutors believe that there is sufficient evidence in the current phase of the proceedings to conclude that criminal deeds could have been committed and that the deeds and circumstances need to be investigated,” Gintarė Vitkauskaitė-Satkauskienė, spokeswoman for the Prosecutor General's Office, told BNS.

The investigation, handled by Vilnius prosecutors, is carried out under the chapters of the Criminal Code which stipulate liability for public instigation of violence against a person or a group of people because of gender, sexual orientation, race, nationality, language, origin, social status, religion, beliefs or attitudes.

Vilnius prosecutors revoked the police finding against investigating the comments, launching their own probe.

An armed attacker killed about 50 people and left about the same number injured in a gay club in Orlando, Florida, in early June.

A number of readers posted anonymous anti-LGBT comments underneath news reports about the shooting, some lauding violence against gay people.
