Aušra Feser, head of the Curonian Spit National Park, told BNS that the fire broke out some 10km from the Lithuanian border. Luckily, the wind is steering the flames away from Lithuania.

"The fire is big but the wind is favourable, north-eastern, and will turn to north in the evening. (...) There's no fire on our side, the wind direction is favourable and there's no threat for us," she said.

Aurelija Lapaitė of Klaipėda County Fire and Rescue Board told BNS that Lithuanian fire fighters were monitoring the situation and were ready to assist.

A huge fire broke out on the Lithuanian side of the Curonian Spit in April, destroying 117.6ha of woodland area.

All in all, the Cyronian Spit covers an area of 8,100ha and has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2000.
