The heavy rainfall in Lithuania on Tuesday evening prevented six airplanes from landing at the Vilnius international airport. In early hours of Wednesday, four of the planes returned to Vilnius, however, two morning flights to Warsaw and Riga were canceled, as the airplanes intended for the flights decided not to return to the Lithuanian capital.

Indrė Baltrušaitienė, spokeswoman for Lietuvos Oro Uostai (Lithuanian Airports) that operates all three airports in the country, said the bad weather conditions caused the Polish LOT flight from Warsaw to Vilnius to be headed back to Warsaw and Latvia's Air Baltic flight from Riga to Vilnius to be sent back to Riga. The flights were resumed following weather improvement, however, two flights from Vilnius to Warsaw and Riga were canceled on Wednesday morning.

On Tuesday evening, Germany's Lufthansa flight from Frankfurt to Vilnius was directed to Riga, Hungary's low-cost airline Wizz Air directed its Reykjavik-Vilnius flight to Kaunas. After the weather conditions normalized, the planes with all passengers returned to Vilnius.

Meanwhile, a Wizz Air flight from Barcelona and charter airline Small Planet Airlines flight from Hurgada were directed to Kaunas. Passengers of the two flights traveled to Vilnius by buses or other transport. Both aircraft returned to Vilnius empty in early hours of Wednesday.

The downpour in the Lithuanian capital on Tuesday evening interrupted traffic and flooded some streets. Weather
