Lithuania remains among the most corrupt European countries – although Lithuanian residents paid fewer bribes to doctors and police officers in the past year, one in four residents have paid a bribe in the past 12 months, shows the Global Corruption Barometer published by Transparency International.

The survey of 1,501 Lithuanian residents was conducted by TNS pollster on Dec. 4 2015 through January 28 2016.

According to the poll, the number of Lithuanian residents who have bribed traffic police declined by a factor of four over the year to 6 percent from 23 percent in 2013, while 24 percent of those going to doctors admit having paid a bribe in 2015, as compared to 35 percent of patients paying money to their doctors three years ago.

The poll concludes that Romania is the only European country with higher bribery rate in the health care system – 33 percent of patients admit to paying bribes to doctors in Romania, as compared to 13 percent in Latvia, 5 percent in Estonia, 6 percent in Poland and 2 percent in Germany.

The Global Corruption Barometer is Transparency International's sociological survey aimed identify the corruption experience of people and their opinion about corruption of national institutions.
