Lithuanian border guards have for the third time this month come across tracks of a bear in the district of Švenčionys at the border with Belarus.

They discovered the fresh traces on the five-meter control line between the two countries.

Laimutis Budrys of the State Service for Protected Areas under the Environment Ministry says that it impossible to tell from the tracks if the same bear has been wandering Lithuania in recent weeks.

"Bears are a rare sight for us, but since we are neighbors with Belarus and Latvia, it is no wonder that they sometimes stray into our country," the specialist said.

According to Budrys, there is little likelihood of a group of bears permanently moving to Lithuania as these animals prefer large woodlands in the neighboring countries.

"Lithuania is much more urbanized than Latvia or Belarus," he noted.
