Forty-four people, 32 men and 12 women, were diagnosed with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in Lithuania in the first quarter of this year, the Centre for Communicable Diseases and AIDS said on Tuesday.

The number of new HIV cases increased by ten compared with the same period in 2015. In almost half the cases (47%) HIV was contracted through drug use.

According to the centre, 205 HIV-positive people have died of AIDS-related illnesses in Lithuania since the start of HIV infection registration in 1988.
