The Seimas of Lithuania on Tuesday lifted the legal immunity of Order and Justice MP Rimas Antanas Ručys, paving the way for his prosecution in a corruption case, after 78 lawmakers rejected a temporary parliamentary commission's resolution calling for preserving Ručys' immunity.

Taking into account the Commission for Ethics and Procedures' conclusion, the resolution's rejection with at least 71 votes in favour means that legal immunity has been abolished, Social Democrat Algirdas Sysas, who chaired the parliamentary sitting, explained.

Ručys was not present during the hearing. His fellow political group members said the MP had been taken to Santariškės hospital.

Prosecutors say Ručys received hundreds of thousands of litas from famous Lithuanian producer Rolandas Skaisgirys, pledging to influence public servants, which Ručys himself strongly denies.
