By covering for Agriculture Minister Bronius Markauskas, Lithuania's Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis demonstrated his dependence and lack of principle, says President Dalia Grybauskaitė.

"After pledging integrity, the prime minister showed he was dependent and incapable of making independent decisions. (…) Covering for the discredited minister, postponement of final decisions and dodging of responsibility is undermining the minister's image as a transparent politician of principle," Grybauskaitė said in a comment provided to BNS by her press service.

In the president's words, the prime minister holds responsibility for the agriculture minister's actions that could be in violation of at least a few chapters of the Constitution.

"Chapters 60 and 99 of the Constitution envisage a ban for members of the Seimas and ministers to get any salary, except for their official duties and for creative work. After honestly admitting that the minister managed his business matters under his mother's name, it turns out he was acting in the form of alleged deals when the minister was the actual beneficiary," said the president.
