Lithuanian MP Simonas Gentvilas is challenging Vytautas Grubliauskas, mayor of the western port of Klaipėda, and will seek to become the liberals' candidate for the port's mayor, according to media reports.

"There's the decision within the party that potential candidates to city mayors must announce theit decision by September. Therefore, I am announcing my decision to run for this post," Gentvilas told the Atvira Klaipėda news website.

Having confirmed his decision to seek re-elections as well, Grybliauskas welcomed future competition.

Lithuania will hold municipal elections in February and March.
