The decision taken by Lithuanian prosecutors not to open a probe against him shows the political retribution attempts in the parliament, says MP Mindaugas Bastys.

"I can state that the parliament's resolution in connection to Chapter 118 of the Criminal Code means political retribution and exceeds the parliament's powers," Bastys of the ruling Social Democrats told BNS on Wednesday in comment of the decision taken by the Prosecutor General's Office not to open a probe into his assistance to another country to act against Lithuania.

Lithuania's parliament has endorsed the conclusions by the parliamentary National Security and Defence Committee drawn after a probe of Bastys' links with Russian state companies and criminal figures, which suggest that he acted against the interests of Lithuania and that his ties with persons working for Russia threaten Lithuania's state security.

Bastys faces impeachment due to the ties, as specified in materials from the State Security Department, to Yevgeny Kostin, who is seen as a representative of Rosatom, Piotr Voyeiko, a former KGB agent, Ernest Matskevich, a journalist of the Russian state channel RTR, Saturnas Dubininkas, who is said to be a former Kaunas mafia leader, and Vadim Pakhomov, a businessman suspected of illegal activity.

Rita Stundienė, spokeswoman for the Prosecutor General's Office, said the decision not to open the probe had been made on Tuesday.

Prosecutors say the materials provided by the State Security Department about Bastys' ties with representatives of Russian state companies and the criminal world “does not contain any information that would prove that MP Bastys' actions contain features of a crime, as stipulated in Chapter 118 of the Criminal Code.”
