Lithuania's President Dalia Grybauskaitė has vetoed amendments to the Law on Public Procurement, which would have enabled political parties to avoid the requirements stipulated in the law, the presidential press service said on Friday.

Grybauskaitė stressed that political parties should be subjected to the highest requirements of publicity and transparency.

"The amendments facilitate corruption, paves way for grey financing of parties, runs counter to the public interest of ensuring transparent party operations and use of funds, furthermore, are inconsistent with the European Union law," reads the press release.

According to the press release, the EU directive on public procurement for political parties adopted this year provides highly specific exclusions in connection to acquisition of services of production of advertisement and propaganda materials, as well as a specific period of applying the exclusions – the exclusions only apply during election campaigns.

Remarks about faults of the law were submitted by the Special Investigation Service and the Public Procurement Service, said the President's Office.
