"I suggest not tearing. That's absurd," he told the Žinių Radijas radio station on Thursday.

The prime minister says that everybody should use their common sense in the situation.

"You can vulgarize any law if you want to. The criteria of reasonableness and proportionality need to be observed in applying a law," he said.

According to Skvernelis, it should be decided if alcohol ads in foreign magazines with a small circulation in Lithuania have any impact on the public.

After a blanket alcohol advertising ban came into force in Lithuania on Jan. 1, foreign magazines with removed or covered up alcohol ads appeared on the shelves of stores. Distributors said they did not want to risks being slapped with a fine for alcohol advertising.

Ten conservative lawmakers have tabled a draft amendment to the Law on Alcohol Control to allow granting an exception from the ban to imported foreign-language publications issued by foreign-registered legal entities.
